A guide to mock designing for gaining investment & making a professional specification document

I’m going to talk about the importance of mock designs (design plans), so if you’re attempting to gain investment for an app or web project, or even trying to get more information on how to start the initial stages of app and web development then this is important

We all know that everything starts with a plan. Business plan, essay plan, project plan, whatever…
Point is, that design must have a plan to.

Mock designs, for anyone who doesn’t really know what I’m talking about, are pre-designs, ruff ideas of what the final product will look like.

This should be one of the first things that you do. If you have a digital agency that your heart is set on working with, then before signing into any contract, ask to have mock designs created. Some may straight up say no to this, but 9 times out of 10 they will pass you onto a graphical designer who can complete these for you.

The reason mocks are so important is that visual descriptions literally speak 1000 words. If you can visually paint a storyline of what you’re trying to achieve along with the specification document, then you’re eliminating the chance of your developer, investor, whoever, misinterpreting the end goal.

“Believe me, I’ve got a design before without using mocks first and I hated it, it was so wrong”!

You want to find a designer who you can work with in person, so you can scribble on a notepad, point to examples there and then, and really get a feel for each others ideas.

The amazing thing about this stage, is that when you see your designs really come to life, the ideas start flying!

8 to 16 mock screens be it an app or website should be enough to get the point across, and the agency who is completing the final work can take really solid inspiration for what your trying to achieve design wise.

So, what now? Get a piece of paper if you haven’t already done it, draw a bunch of squares or rectangles that look like screens, and begin doodling. Speak to a digital agency and find out how and when you can get some mocks created.

Oh, one more thing, make sure you’re mocks are made on the Western side of the world. The reason I’m saying this, is that digital technology is like a Milan fashion show, everything starts in the West, as much as I hate to admit it, America really leads the way with this one… although the UK are up there!

Goodluck!
